If you don’t use the social media giant correctly, you can effectively ruin your company. It’s important that you understand the ins-and-outs of Facebook and just what mistakes to avoid. Here are five ways that social media can ruin your business:
1.Lack of Response
If you take the time to set up a page, you need to understand that you have entered the world of social networking. No matter if you own a business page or a personal one, interaction is assumed. One of the biggest mistakes that business owners make is a lack of response. Ignoring questions, comments and remarks will quickly sink your ship. You don’t need to have running conversations with your fans, but you do need to post replies.
2.Lack of Interaction
Your Facebook page will not take care of itself. If you have any inkling that you can set up your page and then ignore it, don’t bother. If you don’t have the time to keep your page updated, hand over the task to a trusted employee. At least 15 minutes of each day should be dedicated to checking in to your Facebook page and posting appropriate, entertaining content.
3.Forgetting the Lack of Privacy
Privacy settings are virtually non-existent when it comes to social media. Your fans can see every single click you make. That means that when you’re on your business page, you don’t “like” or visit any page that could seem untoward to your client base. The same goes for any pictures that you run across or any off-colored jokes. If you offend a client with something that you find humorous on Facebook, you can be sure that you just lost at least one customer.
If you establish a social media presence, you’re likely to have at least a website. Neglecting to tell your fan base where else they can find you is a mistake best avoided. If you have a website, a blog, a Twitter account, a Pinterest page or a LinkedIn account, make sure that the links are clearly posted on your Facebook page. Never assume that people can find you on their own.
There’s a delicate balance between too much information and not enough. While your Facebook page shouldn’t be used to list every single item you sell or an insider’s guide to the plumbing industry, it should provide enough information to be enticing. Businesses that don’t offer discounts, coupons or the latest product information quickly lose followers. Be cognizant of the ways that you can make Facebook work for you, not against you.
If you’ve taken the time to set up a Facebook account, you must maintain it correctly. Having a mediocre presence in social media is often worse than having no presence at all. If you hope to keep your head above water, make sure that you are using social media to your advantage.
